Activities

September 4 - October 3. L.A. County Fair. There are all kinds of deals, including the following two for this weekend:

September 10-12. L.A. County Fair. $1 admission for active and retired military, reserves, police, fire and paramedics and $1 admission for 1 guest, i.d. required. Ages 5 and younger free every day. PARKING is $10 for general and $15 for preferred. Open on Labor Day, closed Mondays and Tuesdays for the rest of the fair dates.

September 10 and all subsequent Fridays. 12-6 p.m. L.A. County Fair. Ralphs Food Drive Fridays. Bring 5 cans of Ralphs brand food on Fridays to the fair and receive an admission ticket. The food is donated to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

Do you have any children in kindergarten up through 8th grade? The Read to Ride Program is a special reward program for kids who read books over their summer vacations. Kids will receive 3 free carnival ride vouchers for every 2 books they read and write a book report for. September 10. 6-8 pm. FREE weekly concerts at LACMA, no reservations required. BP Grand Entrance. This week: LACMA and the Los Angeles Jazz Society proudly present the 2nd annual “L.A. Jazz Treasure Award” to jazz keyboard pioneer Les McCann. The evening features saxophonist Jovan Jackson and his band who have toured the world with McCann and recently featured on NPR’s “JazzSet.”

September 11. 10 a.m. June 12. 10 a.m. FREE Build and Grow Clinic at Lowes. Bring your child to Lowe's and they can build a pet leash hanger. The kids get goggles and an apron and a kit to build an item. They use hammers their size and get a patch afterward for completing the project.

September 11. 9:30-10:05 a.m. or 11-11:45 a.m. FREE Kids Rhythm Club Drum Circle. Drum Provided. No reservations needed. Event every Saturday morning at REMO Recreational Music Center, 7308 Coldwater Canyon, North Hollywood, 91605.

September 11 and 12. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 7th Annual Thousand Oaks Arts Festival will take place at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza and The Lakes. FREE admission and parking. This includes children's hands-on artistic and interactive art exhibits and Gourmet Food Trucks from 2-5 PM at The Lakes.

September 12. 2-3:30. Free Event. Musical Circus at The Americana at Brand. The Pasadena Symphony Association’s Musical Circus is a favorite for children 3-8 years of age. The Circus will begin with the instrument “petting zoo” where youngsters can toot flutes, blow trumpets, pluck violins and cellos and bang on percussion instruments. 889 Americana Way, Glendale.

September 12. 6 p.m. FREE weekly concerts at LACMA. These one-hour concerts are presented free to the public on Sundays in the Leo S. Bing Theater. This week: The Debussy Trio – Marcia Dickstein (harp), Angela Wiegand (flute), and David Walther (viola) perform works by Nicky Carligeanu, Don Davis, Paul Gibson, Sidney Hodkinson, David Lefkowitz, John Anthony Lennon, and Stephen Andrew Taylor.

September 13. 7 p.m. FREE interactive J.A.M. Sessions: Smba Escandalo. Feel as though you’re at Carnaval in Brazil as Samba Escandalo shakes things up. The tickets are only available for theaters that allow online purchase of tickets, so the choices are somewhat limited, but the discount is worth the drive.
